PFAs

(Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances)

Why Are PFAS Bad For Your Health?

Main concerns about PFAS in drinking water center on their persistence, health risks, and widespread exposure. Often called “forever chemicals,” PFAS do not easily break down in the environment or the human body, meaning they can accumulate over time.

Studies have linked certain PFAS to increased risks of cancer (such as kidney and testicular cancer), weakened immune system response, developmental effects in infants and children, hormone disruption, elevated cholesterol levels, and pregnancy complications.

How Do PFAS Get Into Your Water

PFAS can easily contaminate water supplies through industrial discharge, firefighting foam, landfills, and wastewater treatment plants. Because these chemicals are colorless, odorless, and tasteless, contamination is difficult to detect without specialized testing, which raises worries about long-term, unnoticed exposure.

Additionally, many communities are concerned about the cost and feasibility of removing PFAS from drinking water and about the adequacy and enforcement of government regulations meant to protect public health. For most applications, PFAS can be addressed with specialized granular active carbon (GAC) systems, or with reverse osmosis systems (RO).
